Hadron Collider gets fresh power supply
Posted by roofdog in Category One
It's a move that's been prompted by the energy demands of the computer centre at Cern's servers: the facility can draw a maximum of 2.5 megawatts of energy, yet the task of powering and cooling its massive server racks is already taking it close to that ceiling.
The centre's 8,000 servers - which house about 40,000 processor cores - now consume the same amount of power and generate the same amount of heat as about 2,500 hairdressers' shops.
Now Cern is planning to build a new centre in France, in addition to the existing centre, just over the border from its base in Geneva, Switzerland, linked directly to a power station.

Google hedges against exchange-rate changes
Posted by roofdog in Category Two
Specifically, Google has invested about $80m ($45m) in hedging programmes that counteract currency swings, chief financial officer Patrick Pichette said on a conference call to discuss Google's third-quarter financial results. The foreign-exchange issue affecting Google is that the dollar is currently growing stronger in relation to other currencies, which effectively devalues revenue from other countries.
The hedging programmes "should be viewed as an insurance policy", Pichette said. Google has hedging programmes for the euro, the Canadian dollar and the pound sterling, and plans to extend the programme to other foreign currencies, he said.

Large Hadron Collider computing grid launched
Posted by roofdog in Category One
The Worldwide Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid can draw on the computing power of more than 100,000 processors.
It will allow 7,000 scientists in 33 countries to process the 15 petabytes of data that will be produced each year at the particle accelerator at the Cern laboratories in Geneva, Switzerland.
Academics from across the globe at institutions linked into the grid joined the celebrations at Cern by videolink.
